Driving on company business is one of the most dangerous activities an employee will be involved in, yet relatively few businesses are proactive in managing this risk. Corporate Manslaughter legislation emphasises the duty of care a business has to its employees using vehicles (including their own) whilst on company business.

The driver
- Driver licences - Validate and regularly check your drivers’ licences.
- Driver assessment - Assess each employee's road skills.
- Driver training - To reduce accident frequency and improve fuel efficiency.
The vehicle
- Service and maintenance - Maintain regular documented servicing.
- Vehicle checks - Encourage drivers to inspect and document monthly checks.
- Vehicle life cycle - Set criteria for renewal e.g. vehicle age or mileage. Ensure the chosen vehicles are fit for purpose

The journey
- Regular breaks - The Highway Code recommends a driver should take a break every two hours and EU Regulation insists a 45 minute break is taken every 4.5 hours.
- Speed - Speeding drivers might appear more profitable, but this is offset by lower fuel efficiency, more accidents and higher levels of vehicle depreciation.
- Telematics technology - Observes driver behaviour which should mean fewer accidents and more efficient driving.
